My desktop turns on, and I see no video?

December 17, 2011 by DoubleClickItToFixIt.com

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

Follow the links below for an indepth answer to each question.

My desktop turns on. I see no video?

I run into this more and more these days. Generally, you have two issues. First being your video cable. You can check that simply by seeing if it is connected, and if so connecting it to another system.

If your monitor works fine, then your next issue is the video chipset. More and more I find the newer HP, Dell, and Acer desktop systems use the same Nvidia chipsets as the laptop systems for the HP DV and TX series.

I also find that the add-on video cards, both ATI and Nvidia, have poor circulation fans if any at all, and the chipsets on those need to be reflowed also.

I also find the system may have a capacitor issue. It would display the same signs as a reflow.

To check, just take your cover off, and look at the capacitors. If they are bulging, leaking, or domed, you have a capacitor issue.

Systems that have this issue on a regular basis are Dell SX, GX, OptiPlex, and Dimension systems. I am seeing newer OptiPlex 740, which are AMD based systems, and OptiPlex 745, which are Intel based systems, with capacitor issues.

What if my need is not listed?

As an electronics technician, laptops and desktops are not the only items I work on. If you have a specific need that is not listed above, please feel free to email me at

My laptop will not charge my battery?

December 17, 2011 by DoubleClickItToFixIt.com

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

My laptop will not charge my battery?

This question gets asked quite often. In an older system the battery may be weak, and the cells have died which would require a new battery.

If your system has a loose jack, this would also cause your battery to power poorly. Simply unplug your battery, and try powering it on on straight DC power. If your power cable does not require handling to power on, your battery is bad or an internal fuse.

If you have a bad 2.5mm jack, I sell wiring harnesses to convert your 2.5mm or 1.65mm jack to a wired 2.5mm that mounts to the case lowering the risk of any future DC jack breaks.

Some systems also have internal ceramic fuses that are 10A, 12A, and 15A that may blow. These fuses are soldered directly to the motherboard.

What if my need is not listed?

As an electronics technician, laptops and desktops are not the only items I work on. If you have a specific need that is not isted above, please feel free to email me at

(Unspecified User),

This email will serve as an update on the status and repair of your system sent in.

Currently I have listed the following machine sent in for repair by you:

Dell Latitude D630 with the serialization of Unknown

As agreed your motherboard is billed at $75.00.

Now, with the Dell Latitude D630 with the serialization Unknown has been repaired and is ready for return. The system required a reflow on the Nvidia GeForce G86-620-A2, Intel SLA5H, and Intel SLA5Q chipsets.

As requested, we reversed the “thermoelectric” fan modification performed by Precision Division. We rewired your fan, tested the unit, and checked for any obvious system faults finding none after our repair.

Please keep in mind you need to reapply thermal compound such as Artic Silver 5. You also need to update the video drivers from Nvidia.com and the BIOS from Dell if one is to be applied. If not, please update your driver from Nvidia.com with your correct operating system listed. Please advise your end user to purchase a cooling pad to help insure the removal of heat from the system if you are performing this as a third party repair.

If you need more help in explaining these areas to your end user, please visit http://applelogicboardrepairservice.com/tips.html

Pictures of the repair can be viewed at http://applelogicboardrepairservice.com/img under Unspecified User so we may keep your identity confidential due to the nature of your repair.
