Doubleclickittofixit makes new company milestone with website redesign

Google Analytics screenshot of visitors

Up 120+ percent in 30 days, Doubleclickittofixit has increased its numbers greatly...

Today I decided to check my Google Analytics for the website thirty days after our redesign. I was surprised at what I found. Not only had the website improved, but it had more than doubled in traffic from just under or around 10,000 unique visitors to well over 21,000 unique visitors in just thirty days.

Now, with Google Analytics you have to keep in mind direct content links to PDF, JPG, TIFF, PNG, DOC, and other forms and files are not logged so I feel the number may be even greater than 21,000 unique visitors for the thirty day period.

Please keep sharing, commenting, and writing and we can make this website grow.

What do you do to keep the GPU cool?

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

What do you do to keep the GPU cool?

I have been asked this question in the past few days quite a few times. I read what was posted by Precision Division on their eBay ads stating the BIOS files do not fix the issue, and how they modify the fan.

You have to be aware of what causes your system to fail, and what needs to be done to fix it. You have to do four main things such as update the BIOS and video drivers, exit the heat, reapply thermal paste, and change the handling.

As a repair outlet I can only do so much during the repair. Thermal compound helps greatly. Updating the BIOS and video drivers do much more for a system than hardware mods can alone. Handling has to be changed though.

I can modify the fan easily enough by clipping one wire. I suggest purchasing a laptop cooler because when it breaks and the fans die on that system it is easier to change than the weaker CPU fan that is internally in the system. As many already know, the heatsink on a DV6000, DV9000, F500, and F700 are L-shaped. Heat travels through the L-shaped heatsink to exit the system. With a weak fan exiting heat, the heat spreads through the system making the fan work harder to exit the heat. This heat remelts solder, heats your components, wears the bearings in your fan, and weakens your battery cells. Laptop cooling mats do more to move heat than the CPU fan can do on its own.

Thermal compound is key to thermal recovery. The compound absorbs the heat and causes the transfer to happen quicker. In conjunction with a chill mat, this is key to moving heat so it does not spread through the system.

BIOS and video drivers are important because they both handle how the video and system work to displace heat. The Nvidia drivers add support for games and DirectX applications, but also do more important things like bug fixes. Bug fixes can be simple problems as what the new drivers do as of 2009 which is cause the GPU to run at 10 to 20 percent power when idle. I cannot do that to as system, and neither can any other repair outlet unless they install the drivers. The BIOS update runs the fan at 5v for the complete time the system is on, but it also does another important duty: It runs the CPU at a lower GHz when it is idle the same as the video driver. This cannot be changed in the BIOS without a BIOS update.

Finally, handling is probably the single most important task. As a user you have to know your system, know the reason for the failure, and change your handling. I get calls to ask about reballing and re-stenciling with leaded solder. That will not help with anything. Heat causes solder to weaken and crack so you have to handle that issue. So handling as a user is key to continued working of a new or repaired system. As a user you have to take simple no nonsense precautions to extend the life.

Here are just a few:

Do not let your system sit on a cloth surface.

Do not block the vents.

Do not hibernate or Stand-By your system.

Turn your system off when you are not using it.

If you are considering using copper shims or pennies please read this question:

My laptop turns on, but I see no video?

My laptop turns on, but I see no video?

This issue can be pinpointed to two separate items very quickly.

If your laptop will display a video on an external monitor, then you have a hardware issue with either your inverter or your backlight.

You can change the CCFL, which is referred to as the backlight, by disassembling your LCD screen and clipping the AC contact wires that are white and pink. New CCFL bulbs have to be soldered in after clipping. I get asked if inline butt splices will be crimped in and applied instead of soldering. With each system having different clearances, I see that as highly unlikely.

To change an inverter bar, you simply match model numbers and unplug a molex connector.

If it will not display externally, then your issue is geared more towards a BGA onboard issue. HP DV2000, DV6000, DV9000, TX1000, Dell D620, D630, D630, D820, D830 systems with Nvidia chipsets have the known BGA issues that I can fix.

Most systems need a double or triple chipset reflow.

If you are experiencing this issue and need an answer to why it happens or more detailed information on the issue:

Do you add copper shims or pennies?

My desktop turns on, and I see no video?

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

Follow the links below for an indepth answer to each question.

My desktop turns on. I see no video?

I run into this more and more these days. Generally, you have two issues. First being your video cable. You can check that simply by seeing if it is connected, and if so connecting it to another system.

If your monitor works fine, then your next issue is the video chipset. More and more I find the newer HP, Dell, and Acer desktop systems use the same Nvidia chipsets as the laptop systems for the HP DV and TX series.

I also find that the add-on video cards, both ATI and Nvidia, have poor circulation fans if any at all, and the chipsets on those need to be reflowed also.

I also find the system may have a capacitor issue. It would display the same signs as a reflow.

To check, just take your cover off, and look at the capacitors. If they are bulging, leaking, or domed, you have a capacitor issue.

Systems that have this issue on a regular basis are Dell SX, GX, OptiPlex, and Dimension systems. I am seeing newer OptiPlex 740, which are AMD based systems, and OptiPlex 745, which are Intel based systems, with capacitor issues.

What if my need is not listed?

Do you add copper shims or pennies?

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

Do you add copper shims or pennies?

Your issue with the onboard BGA chipset is heat related. HP DV2000, DV6000, DV9000, TX1000, Dell D620, D630, D630, D820, D830 systems with Nvidia chipsets have the known BGA issues that I can fix by reflowing them.

Now, the question above is asked to me constantly. I personally do not use copper shims. Copper shims and pennies before 1981 do not fix your issue, but do more to hamper it.

You will have three things that can happen. These are an electrical arc, an overload, or a soldering issue.

Your chipsets on your laptop 9 out of 10 times are fine if that have not been worked with in anyway and can be reflowed properly. The chipsets have capacitors located on the top and these capacitors are actually made of ferrite. When you apply Artic Silver and the copper shim in direct contact with your chipset you have stress fractures or arcing. Heat will cause the chipset to move up and down, by design, and will cause the copper to flex causing the capacitor to complete a circuit arcing between the chipset, the shim, and the heatsink which has copper in it. Placing a plastic spacer does not help any since the heat will melt, deform, or damage the chipset in its own right.

Now your chipset may get an overload and burn it out internally with no outer signs. Usually on a DV6000 system you will see a three capacitor cluster on the motherboard overload, and burn the planing of the motherboard. Overloading will cuase the chipset to pull more power in the board causing stress on other chipsets such as the MAX8774, Max8724E, and MAX8734A.

The simplest issue is that your chipset will heat and the shim causes the solder to glob or puddle on the underside of the chipset. There is a reason the CPU is 5mm and the GPU is 3mm with no need to place a shim in to damage that design no matter how poor it may be now or before.

For more details on helping your system not overheat please check this question:

My laptop will not charge my battery?

This section will try to answer the most often asked questions I get.

My laptop will not charge my battery?

This question gets asked quite often. In an older system the battery may be weak, and the cells have died which would require a new battery.

If your system has a loose jack, this would also cause your battery to power poorly. Simply unplug your battery, and try powering it on on straight DC power. If your power cable does not require handling to power on, your battery is bad or an internal fuse.

If you have a bad 2.5mm jack, I sell wiring harnesses to convert your 2.5mm or 1.65mm jack to a wired 2.5mm that mounts to the case lowering the risk of any future DC jack breaks.

Some systems also have internal ceramic fuses that are 10A, 12A, and 15A that may blow. These fuses are soldered directly to the motherboard.

What if my need is not listed?

The true Robert Mannarino of Precision Division – Advanced Computer Repair in Clearwater, Florida

For anyone following the articles I have written concerning my competitor, I use that term very loosely – competitor, one might see a pattern emerging concerning how he critiques a situation.

So today I received an email from a client of mine detailing how they received a link to an article about me posted by an anonymous user, I think in my mind the public can see a pattern here, speaking and critiquing my business and me personally.  In all fairness because I am a straightforward and fair guy I will post the article for everyone to see since he wants to get his word out.

Now I started reading this article and my mouth started to water with sheer excitement.  Ah, the words I read danced in my eyes like spinning ballerinas.

“James Howell of Doubleclickittofixit is a criminal, a thief and a genuine piece of garbage, and I am going to tell you why…”

Then my mind shifted gears because I receive a lot of emails from people about Precision Division, Robert Mannarino, ibuiltonline, precisiondivisionfla, geeksarenotcool, and other usernames used by him online.  So in all fairness, I want to share some of those emails here.

Two days ago, I received an email from a person asking me this:

Comments
Do you know the name of the idiot tht runs Precision Division out of Mount Carmel, PA? Here’s my complaint:

I sent this guy 5 laptops to be fixed. He sent back 4 which took almost 2 months to get back. The 4th (an HP dv6) has been “misplaced”. The one HP dv9720us works fine, the HP dv7 which he claims to have fixed had missing pieces that make it unable to work at all. The other 3 three he did not charge for so I’m not too worried about them. The 9720us also had to be reworked by me because the problem with his aluminum and electrical tape fix didn’t seem to held up too well. It’s much better now that I’ve redone it in a more professional style. Plus he does not answer email or phone if he thinks you have a problem with this services. Completely amateur and a waste of time and money.

Just as few moments after posting this article the client then writes me to say that Precision Division reviewed him on Ripoffreports.com posting this:

I read this email before the post then I remembered back to his post concerning me.

“James used inferior equipment. He is unskilled. He is unintelligent. He can’t actually fix anything. He just heats motherboards and crosses his fingers. He has no working knowledge of digital electronics. He has had no formal training in motherboard repair. Do yourself a favor – steer clear of Doubleclickittofixit.com”

Well, let us say here for the record.  I use what I can to get the job complete.  If that happens to be a Dremel running at 35,000 RPMs to separate a wireless card from the DV9000 previously serviced by Precision Division and Robert Mannarino then my inferior equipment did just that, separated it, replaced it, and fixed it.

Then I think in this whole time of tolerating Robert Mannarino and his Precision Division – Advanced Computer Repair this email I received yesterday has to be tantamount to an early Christmas present.

Comments
Robert Mannarino is a homophobic crook! He did a very dishonest repair, telling us he replaced a cap-only to find out after the computer returned to us with the same problem less than a week later, we took it apart ourselves, to find the “new cap” was a penny and tin foil!!! In the mean time, we had already given him a second computer to repair and $100. This has now been 10 months ago!! At first he was responding to emails by saying he was very busy and to keep contacting him, but now, nothing. After further review online, I see his true character shows on his public Facebook wall comments. I’ll let you read for yourself, but he is not accepting of the Gay and lesbian community…….. furthermore I see in public circuit court records he’s been evicted out of his most recent Business address at Hastings Court in Palm Harbor, FL. And come to think of it, since we gave him the first laptop for repair, he had moved a to 3 different locations. The guy is a scam artist, no questions asked! SCUM BAG!!!! Don’t listen to ANY positive reviews on him, they’re inaccurate!

All jokes aside I felt a flutter in my chest when I read this.  Not the flutter when you feel like you may fall on your face, but more the flutter when you find your true love and go in for a kiss.  I started to get the sweats and was excited and genuinely wanted to know more.  I mean do we not all want to know more?  Someone can just post anything, but that does not make it true.  Truth comes through evidence and discernment correct?  Well, just so I do not suspense you to death, the email is correct.  Everything is true in it.  Actually, not only has Robert Mannarino been evicted for not paying his bills and lost everything in his shop which includes, for the readers, his stuff and your laptops, TVs, and game systems, he also filed bankruptcy while trying to use a federal law to save all of himself.  Then I remembered something very telling about his article concerning me.

“He has absolutely no ethics whatsoever, and you will see why later. Keep reading this is only the beginning.”

Well, being college educated, holding a number of fairly decent jobs, and having to deal with a number of personal issues in life just like everyone else I remember my sociology professor from Dalton State College whom informed us in lecture hall one day that:

“We do not see things as they are, but moreover how we are.”

I have to say I think in the case of Robert Mannarino this seems, in my opinion, to be very true.  So let us take a peak at what we see.

Interesting enough, as I read this I see certain parts that interest me, but the one I see plain as day is this: “He has absolutely no ethics whatsoever…”  The last time I was evicted the eviction was processed and delivered by Mother Nature by way of a tornado.  Now, I know what one might say if they are Robert Mannarino:

“…James gave him some sob story about a tornado (which is his excuse for everything)…”

And then yet another case from a company he did not pay his bills to at all, like a year plus long.

But let us for one moment ponder about ethics and morality.  Ethically do we pay our bills because it is right and just, but morally how do we act to our fellow people?  Do we follow the idea that morally we should respect others as people?  Well, let’s see what Robert Mannarino has to say regarding that question:

Rob Mannarino commented on FOX News & Commentary: Todd Starnes.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Homosexuals cannot continue to terrorize those who don’t approve into silence. Steven Goldstein is trying to bully her into quitting. Let me tell you something. I am not some anonymous coward. I have an opinion, and I’m entitled to it. Last I checked, in America – freedom of speech is a right, not a slogan. I oppose homosexuality. I happen to consider it to be a cult a perversion. This is just the latest in a string of nauseating articles. Two lesbians in California are now drugging their 11 year old child to delay the onset of puberty – so that he can turn into a “she” if he wants to. If that isn’t child abuse, I don’t know what is. But the police won’t arrest them, because that would be “intolerant. Are you kidding me? So homosexuals are above the law? Homosexuals are allowed to abuse children like that – and we’re not allowed to say anything? Screw them! Society has about had it with the gay agenda – and it’s starting to show. It’s not enough for them to be gay anymore. They want to silence objectors, drug children, and re-write history – all while hiding behind some, ironically – very stereotypical rhetoric.

And it’s sickening how the gay community attempts to exploit the tragic phenomenon of teen suicides to pursue their agenda. Do the research – that lesbian couple who is drugging that defenseless 11 year old said that if they didn’t do it, then he might kill himself. What is wrong with society? Are you all that gullible? Children commit suicide because they weren’t taught from when they were babies how to overcome obstacles in life. So instead of overcoming their obstacles, they succumb to them – via suicide.

Gays also target children going through the turmoil of puberty: “Hey kids! Going through puberty? Having trouble focusing? Don’t fit in? You may be gay”! Gays are attempting to exploit children during a fuzzy time in their lives, when hormones are pumping and their bodies are developing. No one thinks clearly during puberty! That doesn’t make it ok for homosexuals to indoctrinate children during puberty.

America: Grow a pair and stand up for what’s right. Too many cowards in public office who are afraid to stand up to low lives like Steven Goldstein. Opposition is NOT synonymous with “hatred”.

Of course, this well thought out and articulate statement will likely be followed by a string of ignorant, hateful comments by homosexuals and their supporters. But let me tell you – you don’t scare me. I’m entitled to my opinion, this is it, if you don’t like it, go to Hell. To the rest of you, have a nice night.

Well, short and sweet I think my responder was right.  It appears that our opinionated Mr. Robert Mannarino of Precision Division – Advanced Computer Repair said all that needs to be said on the subject.  But Robert Mannarino and I do share one common idea, his idea on opinions as a generalized statement and my opinion of him as a generalized statement:

“I’m entitled to my opinion, this is it, if you don’t like it, go to Hell.”

Well, Mr. Mannarino no one can say it better than you so I give you all the glory when I use your quote above.

Oh, and by the way, the picture up top is of him from his Facebook.  Now, in my opinion, I cannot tell if that is a guys foot or a chick’s foot, but no need to worry about that now because I have a letter I received from a client whom BCC me on an email to Robert Mannarino of Precision Division reviewing his paperwork and I feel it seriously sums the entire feelings of all the emails I receive into one concise piece of work.  So this is not my own but I will share it:

Mr. Robert Mannarino,

A couple of months ago my shop received an email solicitation from your business, telling us of your ability to repair motherboards for laptops at the component level. As I am considered to be the laptop specialist in my shop, the email was forwarded to me to peruse. Due to various reasons I was delayed on checking into the email but as we have, indeed, seen quite a few laptops that have the problems mentioned on your site <such as the DV6000 and 9000 series by HP>, it was worth looking into later. With many of these laptops we have been unable to offer a better solution than to send in the machine to HP for motherboard replacement, since they will warranty the repair in many cases, and we cannot. Our ‘fix’ has generally been to replace the motherboard and doing so has become prohibitively expensive without access to piles of spares.

Not being one to simply accept a ’miraculous cure’, which many such solicitations promise, I resolved to look into your company and the claims made of your abilities to fix what to us heretofore had been impossible to repair <lacking the proper equipment to perform such repairs>. I was at first hopeful upon viewing your site, and the multiple things presented there. The site itself seemed fairly-well put together and informative, and indicated you knew of the specific problems that plague certain models of laptops. I then opened another portal and searched for reviews of your business and commentary on the repairs performed there. It took a bit of searching but I finally found several comments and reviews. As I went through them, I became a little wary. The reviews I did find were not good.

Having been in the computer business for 10 years, I am well aware that there are times when the business may receive criticism that is unwarranted and unfounded. Sometimes customers expect miracles to be performed, the dead raised, and Rainbow Bright Ponies for all. Sometimes even the best efforts don’t fix the issue, or unexpected problems are encountered. Most of the time, however, things work out well, and if you do a good job, or screw things up but make the customer whole, everyone gets a handshake and nothing gets said. At worst, the customer tells his friends there was an issue, but it was handled. Serious complaints and bad reviews normally only make it out into the public realm when someone has Really screwed the pooch, whether it be the Business, or the Customer, who is at fault. Most complaints, however, can be racked up to misunderstandings. So I took the complaints with a grain of salt, giving your business the benefit of the doubt.

That was until I ran across a business called Doubleclickittofixit. And read through some of the information he had posted, and responses/emails from your business.

After reading what was posted there, I was a bit alarmed. I researched what had been posted on that website and found that, indeed, it appeared to be true. An incredible example was the Service Contract your ‘customers’ are required to sign before you will ‘repair’ anything. I could write pages of commentary on this alone, but I will confine myself to just this: I have never had the opportunity before to read any document which so thoroughly grinds the 1ST Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America into paste. Being bound and gagged would be a fair comparison.

I found myself to be thoroughly appalled by such a contract. How anyone would let themselves be stripped of all rights to say anything negative, especially if it was legitimate, with even the slightest hint of disagreement being sufficient to warrant being taken to court, is beyond me.

I continued reading about the purported documentation attributed to your company, mainly out of fascination; kind of like when you can’t look away from a train wreck in progress. Three more examples of incredibly distasteful commentary leaped out at me: describing the person who owns doubleclickittofixit as “looks like one of those slow kids behind the counter at McDonalds”, a reply on a forum page calling him a ‘lying lowlife’, and last, but not least, the commentary posted concerning a negative review of your company by one of your customers. In that rebuttal you posted, publicly, that he had ‘serious psychological problems and was of poor character and dishonest”.

That one really did it. I’ve had customers in my shop that we, as techs, felt could be replaced with a radish and no one would notice. But we NEVER publically derided them. Our customers are our lifeline; without them we would not have a business. We may discuss privately the completely moronic idiocy some of our customers have presented, but NEVER has our company publicly denounced and insulted anyone that came to our shop, and most certainly we would never identify them by name. Complaints we have received were acted upon immediately and courteously; we never dug down for base insults or attempted to slander the person across the counter. That is the height of unprofessionalism.

I spent several hours looking through your website, other pages of reviews, and following links, just so I could honestly say that I gave your company a fair chance. Then I called up James. His number is clearly posted. I’m sure you know who he is, as you posted a good amount of text knocking him down. After a very pleasant conversation with him, something which cannot be done with Precision Division, <as expressly stated on your own webpage, email only! Another reason to not do business with you> I hung up the phone with a good impression of him, and an even lower impression of your company. James offered to show me his abilities, and agreed to fix multiple machines in our shop that would require new motherboards to bring them back to life, at a special cost of only 60$ per repair. I am preparing 4 machines for shipping at this time, and have another 9 that may need his attention. They will be sent to Doubleclickittofixit.

The major thrust of this letter I hope you have discerned. If not, I’ll give you some ideas: There is a ton of information in the public realm which indicates your company is very unprofessional; it insults its customers; attempts to squelch legitimate complaint by threat of heavy-handed legal action; is abusive and insulting towards people who disagree with it; is slanderous itself; and appears scared of its own shadow, as exemplified by its over-reliance on threats of legal action and prosecution of anyone and everyone for any reason it deems actionable..

You might want to put some effort into making your company a bit friendlier and less aggressive. My Boss took one look at a printed copy of your ‘service contract’ and made a comment about YOUR mental state that I won’t repeat. He then instructed me to delete whatever we got from you. *I* felt, however, that it might be worth the time to let you know how you lost a good source of business. Maybe it will change your attitude towards your potential and present customers for the better. By the way, you might want to note that Microsoft was started in Bill Gates’ garage – in reference to the comment you made about James’ place of business.

Cheers, mate.

UPDATED: Do you add copper shims or pennies, and do they work if they are used?

In a previous article I had written, Do you use pennies or copper shims?, I had tried to explain in a straightforward and concise manner that copper shims do not help cool your chipsets in a proper manner as to keep it from overheating.

To get to my update one day I was speaking to a computer shop owner whom had called me to express his desire to add copper shims to his laptop repairs. I tried my best to convince him that copper causes issues when trying to cool the system. Between the capacitors located on the top of the chipset and overloading the motherboard electrical circuits, my warnings were let go by the way side. He stated, “I can just add a penny and get the chipset to cool down and my customers will be happy in the end.” Now, this is where I started thinking. My father is an avid coin collector and stamp collector and is electronics professional. He has done both for many years so I decided to ask him a few questions. As I was asking him questions, he decided to ask me one which was, “How much copper do you think is in a penny?” This got me to thinking, “Yeah, your right how much copper is in a penny?” Well, the chart below explains just how much is in a penny.

1982 – 2011 Zinc Lincoln Cent Value (United States)

U.S. MINT SPECIFICATIONS
Denomination: $0.01
Obverse Image: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln
Reverse Image: Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Metal Composition: 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper
Total Weight: 2.5 grams
Comments: The zinc and copper versions of the cent were both produced in 1982. They can be differentiated by weight (3.11 grams for the 1909-1982 copper cent, 2.5 grams for the 1982-2011 zinc cent).

Now, I had written a few forum posts on the HP Support forums stating about the copper shim danger and what it can do to your chipsets when a guy from Ontario made the comment.

“Well, I agree copper shims are bad. I used a penny in a repair and it failed, that is why now I use dimes because they are made of silver.”

Well, let us put the facts straight. Dimes may appear silver, but have not been made of silver since 1964. Not one grain of silver is in what is called a clad coin, or coins produced after 1964 for general circulation unless it is a Kennedy Half Dollar or Eisenhower Silver Dollar up to 1971 which are 40% silver by volume. Below is the chart showing us what is in a dime.

1965 – 2011 Roosevelt Dime Value (United States)

U.S. MINT SPECIFICATIONS
Denomination: $0.10
Obverse Image: Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States.
Reverse Image: Torch, oak branch, and olive branch.
Metal Composition: 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel
Total Weight: 2.268 grams
Comments: The term ‘dime’ comes from the French word disme, meaning “tithe” or “tenth part.”

Now, we see that a dime is far from silver, but COPPER! Amazing, huh?

Both coins now have had their compositions explained so now we have to get all scientific. For developing why pennies, dimes, and copper shims do not work besides the obvious dangers, we have to refer to the basic laws of thermodynamics. You may say, “The laws of thermo-what?” As I explain what I mean we must reference what is called the first law of thermodynamics and it states:

The first law of thermodynamics distinguishes between two kinds of physical process, namely energy transfer as work, and energy transfer as heat. It tells how this shows the existence of a mathematical quantity called the internal energy of a system. The internal energy obeys the principle of conservation of energy but work and heat are not defined as separately conserved quantities. Equivalently, the first law of thermodynamics states that perpetual motion machines of the first kind are impossible.

In layman’s terms spelled out the first law states:

Matter and energy can not be created or destroyed (only converted between the two). Likewise, heat-the movement of energy from a hotter object to a cooler object-is never eliminated, but only moved elsewhere. To accomplish this, there are three primary modes of heat transfer: convection, conduction, and radiation.

By adding a copper shim or a penny you have only adapted the first law of thermodynamics to amplify the mode of heat transfer by conduction since the principal is explained as:

Conduction – the transfer of heat through matter with no net displacement of the matter

Now that copper shims and pennies only operate primarily on conduction, you have to relate that certain substances and metals have a level of thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity is explained as:

Thermal Conductivity is the amount of heat a particular substance can carry through it in a unit time. Usually expressed in W/(mK), the units represent how many Watts of heat can be conducted through a one meter thickness of said material with a one Kelvin temperature difference between the two ends.

The thermal conductivity of all substances can be rated on this scale. Human bodies, copper, water, shaving cream, a piece of bread can be weighed by this principal and scientific fact. The chart below shows how each substance conducts heat over time.

Thermodynamic Profiles in W/(mK)

Compounds
Diamond 1000 – 2500
Silver 429
Copper 401
Gold 318
Aluminum 237
Brass (37/15 Cu/Zn) 159
Iron, pure 80.4
Carbon Steel 54
Bronze 50
Lead 35.3
Titanium, pure 21.9
Stainless Steel 16.3
Ice (H2O @ -5°C) 1.6
Glass 1.2 – 1.4
Concrete 1.1
Rubber 0.16
Wood 0.12 – 0.04

Highlighted in this chart we see how copper rates on the list. As part of the principal of thermal conductivity you can see that conduction is also rated on the principal that the item must heat up aggressively. With this being said the conductor must wick heat then move it elsewhere otherwise it wicks the heat then superheats the shim then heats the chipset by way of convection causing a failure.

We also see how pennies are made of zinc, not copper, as the primary composition which rates nowhere on the chart. That can be found here:

Zinc 116

The idea of using pennies as a copper shim will not work. Then using a dime will? No, the idea of running a dime as a copper shim will work in theory except the principal of thermal conductivity says the dime will heat up to transfer the heat from the shim, but goes nowhere after that. Heating the motherboard in such a localized manner can cause the flexing, or distortion, of the PCB layers. With distortion, you get flexing and uneven heating causing unrepairable damage to the layers of the motherboard.

As a trend I see variations of the heater coil principal were homemade heat sinks are comprised of aluminum and copper layers. The idea is that the application of the principal in industrial applications can be scaled down to work properly in a electronic situation to help or assist the removal of heat. I give an A for effort, an A for logic, and a F for practicality. As technicians we have to reference back to the principal of thermodynamics and its first law then place logic that convection is the mode of transport for this energy that we are trying to displace. When we take all of that into account we find that the logic and effort will not move the mountain of practicality. Below is an example of an aluminum handmade heatsink placed on a laptop chipset by an eBay seller:

Between the 27 single layers of aluminum foil we see and the electrical tape we have to wonder if this was actually worth the effort. I can say if it ended in my shop, I will say no.

Robert Mannarino owner of Precision Division Advanced Computer:
He can talk about any who says any thing about him as being an incompetent dishonest lowlife.. well let me tell u a little about Robert and I hope to God people listen because if you send your computer to him you may never get it back and if you do it may take 2 years and look like mine.No hard drive no covers on the back the screen held with tape and many other things wrong..
The first dealings I had with this self proclaimed computer expert was in Nov of 2009, I got it back in a week, working,, YES..how long 1 week.. the invoice said he repaired bridged solder joints Nvidia GPU. for $213.99 I took it back the same problem and he said he would get right on it .Well he charged me again said it was a different problem,
Well I cant even count the number of times I call him ( this was before he switched to voice mail, and his box was always full). and stopped buy the shop (before he moved with out telling any of his costumers ) and ask for my computer ( it still wasn’t fixed)after 6 months. All I wanted was to just get my computer, He always had a reason for not returning it. So dumb me I always walked out with out it..
I return to Idaho ever March and went with out it, he said he would Fex X it to as soon as it was done.. My daughter works close by so I ask her to go pick it up for me fixed or not 3 months later, he still refused to give it back said he needed to replace the mother board. never told me..and even though I told him to give it to her,,,When she went back a couple months later he was gone shop was closed. the man next door said he had closed up shop didnt where he went,,
I return T Fl. every Oct. at this point the only way to get hold of him was by e mail. After I would say at least 100 email exchanges and name calling on his part and insults and telling me he had told me on many accounts I need to buy a new mother board, that seems to be his fix for every thing. well I didn’t have the spac. to order one. when he finely did give them to me I had a new board in my hands in 4 days, Well he wanted me to drive to Palm Harbor and meet him in some industrial parking lot to give it to him,,,,,No way.
After calling a lawyer here and sent him an email telling him he had 10 days to return it.. still nothing..At this point there was no way i thought he still had it..
Back to Idaho in April without again.
Well in June of 2011 I finely got it back , and what a joke that was. I took the computer right down to a computer shop and had him doc. the condition i recived it..will send a copy if u like
He still advertising his business as being on 49th Street in Clearwater,Fl. He has not been there for at least 2 years..Drive by and see for your self…
Stay away from this guy, sure he advertises he charges low to do the work,,, I could go on an on about this guy, but there is just to much history to go into here if any one wants proof contact me I will be happy to share..
RUN AS FAST AND AS FAR AS U CAN FROM THIS GUY….
Just remember you get what you pay for…

he tells every one that if they say anything bad about him he will sue,, Well I say bring it on Rob you will have your day in court soon enough

DO NOT SEND YOUR COMPUTER TO THIS PERSON – Paying customers won’t post anything negative because he makes anyone sending a computer to him sign a ridiculous contract threatening legal action if they post anything negative. The truth is, if this guy did his job he wouldn’t NEED to threaten his prospective customers with litigation – HORRIBLE reviews on BBB, and my boyfriend got scammed.

This disorganized chump WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND RUN and then do everything he can to keep the truth about him off the web so he can continue bilking victims.

I used this service over fifteen months ago. I purchased a laptop repair from Ebay. I shipped him my laptop. He repaired it and returned it. It quit working less than sixty days later. I sent it back to him under warranty. It was recommended to me that I purchase a higher-cost solution which I did. I have emailed him hundreds of times now. He does not have my laptop any longer. He either lost it, it was stolen, or he sold it. He has said many times that he would replace it but so far, nothing. I feel like I was completely swindled.

I’m not sure what to make of this business. I think it’s just one guy, Robert Mannarino, who appears to know a lot about laptop repair, but he has a very different opinion than I about how repair business should be conducted.

Before sending him a laptop and a monitor, I had done a lot of research and knew the issues that both had. The monitor needed to have a BGA chip resoldered, and the laptop needed an nvidia chip resoldered. I followed all the rules stated in the contract when sending him my items.

We kept in contact over the first month and he informed me that the BGA chip couldn’t be repaired, so I ordered the the replacement add-on circuit board on ebay and had it shipped to him. At that point I assumed he was near completion because all he had to do was replace the add-on board and put it back together. After another month, I asked again and he said it was “almost done”. For the next two months I periodically asked if it was ready every week or so. The response was always “almost done”, “one last thing”, “i’ll do it tonight”, etc…

Finally, I started to get frustrated and told him that it had been almost five months and he should just send the items back to me so I can take them to a normal repair shop. Another two weeks went buy and nothing happened. At this point I had over twenty emails with the “almost done” line, and I was getting desperate. I told him that if he didn’t send the monitor and laptop to me in two weeks, working or not, I would call the police and report them stolen. I made it clear that I would still pay the repair fee if they were returned working. The response was that the contract states “90 days or more”. So that means he can keep it for 10 years? 20 years? Half a year to replace a circuit board is not operating and in good faith considering that most repair shops would have been finished in less than a month.

Fortunately, that got his attention and he sent my items back. The didn’t get repaired and I didn’t pay for repair fees. However, it was five months later and I had spent over $300 on shipping the monitor to Florida and back.

I will give Precision Division credit in that with only a couple of exceptions, I have received responses to most of the 35+ emails that I sent. He doesn’t always address every question you ask, but at least a response is better than being ignored.

I don’t think he’s purposely trying to scam people. I don’t know if he really is so swamped that repairs are backed up over six months, or if he just likes playing WOW and has a procrastination issue. Whatever the case, be very careful if you decide to send him something for repair. Make sure you don’t need it fixed soon, and document everything.

Personally, I will never sign a contract again that says “N days or more”. With a contract like that, someone could fix your stuff and then use it for 5 years until it’s out of date and send it back – they’d be getting paid to use your stuff!

I gave my notebook to Precision Division for repairs to the motherboard. I expected him to have the nbk for at the most a month. He ended up having the nbk the first time, for 5 months and basically ignored every communication I sent to him regarding completion. I finally got the nbk back, but it still did not work. I gave it back to Precision Division, and asked that he fix under warranty and much quicker than before. Once again, he chose to take his time fixing it and I waited another 4 months. In my communication with him, he told me he works from home and completes his work at his own pace regardless of customer satisfaction. In fact, here is a quote from our communication after I told him I would seek legal action to get my nbk back: “I do not respond to ultimatums, in fact, since you decided to make a threat, I will go out of my way to not have it done on Sunday. I am under no legal obligation to have a phone. I have email. I am under no legal obligation to fix the laptop in any specific period of time. I have several jobs to handle at one time, and when I get to them I get to them. When it’s done it’s done – but I don’t rush for anyone.” This is after he had my nbk for 9 months and then he ended up still charging me for the motherboard work that was to be under warranty. It was only till I told him I would pursue legal actions to get my nbk back, that he finally completed service. Precision Division did not care about me as a customer and I know I’m not the only one. Precision Division’s repair and customer service habits are extremely unprofessional and not worthy of conducting business for anyone.

First laptop I sent had a power problem, he emailed me back saying the screen must have got cracked in the shipping, so I had to file an insurance claim with the post office, which turned out painless. He sent the laptop back to me and said it was fixed, I got it and it was still doing the same thing. I sent it back to him and he told me it couldn’t be repair and he would just give me a credit for another free repair. So I sent him another one, he told me that the motherboard was unfixable. To this day I still have not received either of the two laptops back and it has been months. I have emailed him countless times and he replies that he is very busy and will get to it soon, If I ever go to Clearwater, Fl I’m going to stop in and bitch slap this mofo and get my stuff back.

DO NOT USE THEM!!!! I found him on another “for sale” site selling a diagnostic test on a laptop for $1.00. I read the reviews and went ahead and mailed him my computer. Little did I know that his previous ads threatened a voided warranty if negative feedback was left on the “for-sale” site! No wonder everyone left great feedback!

After the initial diagnosis, he told me that his “usual” fix didn’t work & I needed a new motherboard. Three separate times I told him I did not want to replace the motherboard, and each time his response was to ask me again and increase the total repair price – then he just fixed the computer without my consent.

To this day, over six months later, he still refuses to release my computer and now says it belongs to him because I didn’t pay him to replace my motherboard. I never paid him because he repaired it without my permission. DO NOT USE THEM!!!!

How can I tell the difference between a hot air rework and an IR reflow?

In this post I will try to show and display the added stress that using a hot air system of any kind can damage the system motherboard. Now, in the hands of a skilled technician hot air systems can work great on non-powered chipsets, ie. chipsets with capacitors on top of them. Now I get questions all the time asking me such great questions as:

1. Why do I need to have a reflow performed by an IR system when I can do it with…. now we fill in the blank with such great industrial items as hair dryers, shrink wrap gun, heat gun, hot air station, flaming alcohol?

2. Why reflow it since it will fail again?

In the picture overhead, you see some of the damage that hot air systems will do to your chipset. As explained in the video below, the capacitors are visible to have been removed by force with the hot air system.
